  • Practical Requirements

    Following are the practical requirements to successfully achieve the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (FE and Skills):

    • You must carry out a minimum of 250 placement hours in a Further Education setting at two different locations.
    • You must have 150 placement hours, involved in teaching practice (100 hours dedicated to subject-specific teaching).
    • You must have support from two mentors during your placement, a subject-specialist and a local pastoral mentor.
    • You must undergo 10 formal observations (8 in-person, 2 remote) throughout the work placement. Each observation must be at least 45 minutes long, conducted by the provider tutor, subject specialist or placement mentor.

  • Assessment

    The assessment for Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (FE and Skills) is done through the demonstratation of competence in both theoretical knowledge and professional practice. A comprehensive portfolio of evidence of teaching practice and demonstrating the occupational standards will be assessed through completion and evidence of all required practice hours in line with placement requirements. A final professional discussion of a 30-minute oral examination will be conducted in person by two qualified assessors focusing on professional practice. All these assessment methods are to ensure your competence to achieve the qualification and progress toward professional status such as QTLS.

I have had a long career in teaching, assessing, and quality assurance (both internal and external). I started my career in retail, and over a period of eight years, became a supermarket store manager, self-employed contracts manager and an area manager overseeing sixteen CTN stores. I stepped into Education commencing as an assessor then internal verifier. Within two years I was a qualified post sixteen teacher focussing on IT, quickly becoming a Microsoft Certified Engineer. Combining the role of teacher/assessor and IT Manager, whilst in the post of a local government officer, I supported a range of sector areas through delivery of apprenticeships and private courses.
